Giving Thanks

Last night we went with older daughter to  the Harvest Thanksgiving Service in Wells Catherdral. This particular service is attended by The Somerset Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs and by the pupils of Wells Catherdral School. It was the first occasion that we had been but it is of course a service of great significance to those involved in farming.
Wells Catherdral is a splendid setting and the service started after the hour bell of the medieval clock had rung resounding in the silence throughout the Catherdral.
There were of course several rousing harvest hymns although the words "All be safely gathered in" are always doubtful ones whilst crops such as potatoes and maize still await harvesting. Members of Young Farmers in their white coats presented their harvest offerings. While I was obviously  unable to take photos at the time the offerings were later on show in the Town Hall.

You can see that all kinds of production were included.

The service was followed by a supper in Wells Town Hall where a good spread was provided. All in all it was a very pleasant evening.

  1. I like a harvest celebration & it's how our Thanksgiving was developed ... bringing in the sheaves we will come rejoicing bring in the sheaves ...

  2. Much indeed to be thankful for! Reminds me of the harvest festivals we used to have in primary school.
Love that last pic with the pumpkin as a vase.
