The Spuds are in!

Once the straw was all in and Farmer Daughter was back from her holiday it was time to start on getting those potatoes gathered in.

This meant a series of days out with the potato harvester working all morning and afternoon.

It takes 3 people to man the potato harvester. One driving and two on the harvester itself removing stones, soil clogs and and bad potatoes.

Sky is an honorary member of the team.

The potatoes are deposited into trailers ready to be unloaded into the store in the potato shed.

Under canine supervision of course!

When I walked out on Sunday there were only a few rows left to do. The weather had again been on our side. By late Monday morning they were finished on the same day as they finished last year only a few hours earlier.

This is only the beginning of the process. They have to be sorted, bagged and of course sold! Just have a thought for the lowly potato next time it is on your plate.

  1. Looks like a good harvest! What kind do you grow? Or do you grow more than one kind? -Jenn

    1. We grow Wilja which are a white potato and a good all rounder. We have grown it for many years finding that it suits our soil conditions. Occasionally if we have to buy some more seed potato we have a small amount of another variety.

  2. That must be a relief that the good weather held while the crop was harvested. Do you have much more to harvest before the weather changes next week?

    1. All is safely gathered in! The fired work now involves preparing for next year’s crops.
