Snap:The Early Clock

One item that I have noticed in many of the places I have been lately is an early way of telling the time namely the sundial. I have therefore decided to use some of my finds to join in Helena's Snap.
The sundial is a feature in many gardens. We indeed have our own. This photo was taken back on one of the frosty days we had in January and as the shadow tells you about 9 in the morning.

The next is set in part of the vegetable gardens at Tyntesfield House between the greenhouses and the newly restored Orangery. The shadow is clear but the time isn't although I can tell you it was about 4pm.

Then in the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. A dull day with no evident shadow. It was around 4pm.

Lastly the most curious of all. This was on a gravestone in the same churchyard as the gravestone with a bird bath. The inscriptions on this one are quite apt. I feel I must return to this churchyard for a closer look. There is a vague shadow telling you this was an afternoon stroll!

I have more but rather than break the rules I will save them for another day.

  4. Very interesting Snap collection. I like the idea of a sun dial on a gravestone - the whole time flies, time marches on, our time is limited reference or maybe this person just knew that people would stop at her/his marker. Looking forward to seeing the other sundials.

  5. A really interesting collection. We have a family story about a sundial on a birdbath like that, part of which we have and part of which had to be left in a house which was sold. I've never seen another one quite like it until now
