I learnt several new facts while we were there. I learnt that this residence was rebuilt in the 1840s by Charles Barry the architect who built the Houses of Parliament. I also discovered that the grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown. These beautiful daffodils and new woodland are more recent additions with the tip of the house just visible behind.
There are a number of follies in true Capability Brown style with this one having been transported from London.
Brian also learnt something new. A novel way to clean his boots at the end of the working day. Not so sure he will be installing one of these on the farm though.
A great day out ended with a little dance send off from one of the staff especially for my camera. We had been told that the butler turns car park attendant on these open days. Perhaps this is him.
We also learnt that lunch in the cafe was cooked by their cook in this very special house. Have you gathered enough clues now? Where do you suppose we have been?

ReplyDeleteI think this might be Highclere Castle (of Downton Abbey fame). It's a magnificent building wherever it is.
ReplyDeleteI think you might expect to see Carson answering the door. Another friend went there for afternoon tea a couple of weeks ago so I may have had an extra clue.

ReplyDeleteAfter 6 wonderful seasons, I know that front door. The butler looks a jolly good sport to take on parking duties.
