There was hot soup, sausages and baked potatoes. It always tastes better when you are outside.
The little boy above sat in the Landrover was not happy at all. He was not keen to join in. It turns out he was upset about burning the guy which he and his sister made. When you think about it the tradition is pretty gruesome.
There was toasting of marshmallows on sticks. Quite tricky with such a hot fire.
The next evening we had another bonfire at a neighbouring friend's farm.
We were lucky to have another clear dry night.
We had a few fireworks.
It's always a bit worrying setting off your own fireworks. This time we had what could have been a very nasty accident. A firework tipped and sent a stray flame straight at us. Luckily it missed everyone but shot into the trailer where we had served the food. Hitting the back wall (leaving a substantial mark) it fell down onto the bales of straw. It luckily dropped onto a bag which with some quick reaction from one of our friends who managed to throw it outside. A very nasty fire was fortunately averted.
It took everyone a while to settle down again. A few sparklers were seen as a safer option.
Certainly a memorable evening.
Wow, that was a big bonfire! You certainly had a lucky escape with that wayward firework, it just goes to show that no matter how careful you are, you can never anticipate their unpredictability.
ReplyDeleteFireworks scare me! We went to an organised event once (as adults), something went wrong and my sister was hit in the face by part of a rocket which luckily hadn't worked properly so she wasn't seriously injured.
ReplyDeleteI can remember the bonfires we had as kids and the excitement of making the guy. We lived in a row of four houses and it was arranged so that the bonfire was in the garden of one of the end houses, usually ours, and the fireworks were set off in the other end house - as far away from over excited kids as possible! Mum used to make toffee apples for all of the kids in the street.
Fireworks have such an element of danger about them - pretty to look at (sometimes) but it still is a fire potential ... thankfully you had a quick thinking person close at hand. I'm with your little person - burning "Guy" does seem like a horrible way to see your handy work end up as.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen a bonfire that big. I didn't know much about Guy Fawkes Day until this week. Fireworks always have an element of danger; I've never been willing to buy anything other than sparklers.
ReplyDeleteFireworks have been going off around us here and we're so close together we've had bits fall into the garden. Glad that no one was injured with the mishap!
