Snap: Fresh from the Garden

I have chosen for Helena's Snap this week to visit the vegetable garden. Well to be precise several gardens.
1. This curious plant was in the kitchen garden of Kew Palace. It is very aptly named. Have you ever tried this variety?

2. Squashes and marrows are prevalent in every vegetable garden at this time of year.

3. Another first for me. I have seen orange tomatoes before but never orange beef tomatoes. These were growing outside in the main kitchen garden at Kew.

4. Lastly wandering around our own vegetable garden this cabbage bejewelled with raindrops caught my eye.

  1. My husband's not a fan of eggplant, but I've prepared the white variety a couple of times. The orange heirloom tomatoes are available here in the local farmer's markets and we love those.

  2. Such a yummy SNAP collection. With all the farmer's markets full on now, we get to see all the varieties of some tradition veg. Heirloom tomatoes are very popular so there is wide variety of colours. I am not a fan of eggplant, so I have seen the colours & varieties but not tried although I did once buy a purple/white striped one for a Thanksgiving table display.

  3. I've never had marrow. Actually, now I think about it, I'm not sure there are a lot of marrows round here

  5. Oh these are all so tasty looking. I like big heritage tomatoes - as long as they are full of flavour of course.

  6. Never knew aubergines grew like that! I wonder if the white ones taste any better than the purple ones...

    1. Now this is interesting. The over the pond folks seem more familiar with the white aubergine. I did see a lot of different colour vegetables and tomatoes in farmers markets in the States but then I don't visit them very often in this country! The tomatoes seem to be heirloom over there and heritage over here and I just call them beef tomatoes!!

    2. Me too - I know them as beef tomatoes and very delicious they used to be back when I was allowed to eat them! There seems to be a theme in heritage/heirloom - both curious terms and I wonder how they got that name.
Japan has loads of unusual versions of common veggies but I'm pretty sure the aubergines I saw there were all purple/black (even if odd shapes and sizes). Ha - while wedding shopping with a friend we came across "egg" coloured bridesmaid dresses, which were deep purple - needless to say they were US imports!

  8. I have seen lots of white eggplants here but I haven't tried them as yet. There are lots of squash, pumpkin etc appearing in the shops now. Love the cabbage photo.
