There is only one theme that I can choose to join in with Mary-Lou's Take Three Thursday. The last couple of days I have talked about harvesting the barley. Today the combine harvester was back in action after a day's break. It has not finished yet but has cut a good amount.
So here are three pictures taken yesterday of the barley harvesting.
1. Long distance view.
2. The combine close up
3. Downloading the grain which is taken back to the farm to be stored.
It's a little early this year but it's good to see the end result of a year's hard work.
Thanks for joining in Maggie. Neat perspective of the harvest.
ReplyDeleteVery evocative. Does the lack of any rain pose a big pronlem for the grain? I was walking through barley fields yesterday. It seemed shorter than in previous years, and the grain hard as stone. (Before you say anything, I broke off an ear from a stray plant that was on the other side of the path, in a ditch.)
ReplyDeleteThe harvest is certainly early this year. I think the boys are happy with the barley. It is possible that the grain you tried was not yet ripe. Our crop is Autumn barley whereas some crops are Spring barley which matures later. The length of the straw is probably shorter this year with the dry weather. Th advantage of this is that the crop doesn't fall over so easily. The disadvantage is that straw is reputed to be expensive this year so it's beneficial to have as much straw as possible!
