Blooms in Late October

We now seem to be having those bright autumn days that we have been waiting a long time for. Yesterday morning we had the first frost which will undoubtedly take out some of the fragile plants. It's quite surprising what is still in flower. The cosmos continues to flower.

There are still a remarkable number of roses blooming including the Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

There is also this beautiful pink one.

There could be more to come.

Bizarrely the lilac is also in flower.

It may all change now the weather is colder.

Growing Fast

I haven't given a Poppy update for a while. She is growing at a rate and like most puppies chewing everything in sight so a continual stream of toys are directed her way.

She is learning simple obedience so I feel safe letting her off the lead for short periods. Luckily we have a few well fenced paddocks with no livestock in where it is safe to let her off.

She has so far stayed quite close to me.

She is still a bit slow on the toilet training but we are getting there!

A Few More Heroes and Some Villains Too

I have already posted some of the scarecrows from this year's trail. You may recall that the trail is a fundraiser for the local charity A Sibling's Wish set up to help bereaved children in memory of a local boy Harvey Hext. The theme this year is Heroes and Villains.
The scarecrows are as always a very high standard. Everyone puts in 100% effort and gives a lot of thought and imagination into creating them. A few have been damaged by strong winds and some sadly by vandalism.
This RNLI one is done by Winford Parish Church.

Spongebob Squarepants is smiling across from the wall opposite.

Then there is the heroine Malala Yousafzai.

This Red Arrows is simple but effective.

Can you see Peter Rabbit in this Beatrix Potter scene?

Miss Trunchball is definitely one of the most unpopular headteachers.

Autumn Light

A lot of the days during October have been dull and raining. this Wednesday the weather improved and was really quite sunny. the leaves with the light through them looked lovely when I took Poppy for a quick morning walk.

There are still a few medlars on the tree.

There are also some interesting leaf patterns.

Take Three Thursday : Nasturtiums

I am joining Mary Lou today in her weekly meme Take Three Thursday taking three pictures to show what you have noted this week.
It is some years since I grew any nasturtiums from seed but every year i have a large number of plants that self seed. They grow all around the area where my washing line is and are still in full flower.
Here are a few of the blooms today after it had rained overnight.
Three different colours.

Leaves of Many Colours

A walk around my mum's garden produced quite a variety of leaf colour and shape.
The Liquid Amber is always a good bet at this time of year.

I think this is a Viburnum.

Then the cherry tree.

Even the fig shows a variety of colours as well as shape.

Technical Issues

A lack of home internet makes it difficult to  write a proper post this morning. There were 4 BT vans st the bottom of the drive and they were busy digging up the field gateway when I came out this morning.
Hopefully internet will be restored later.

Finding her Feet

It's been a busy week for Poppy as she gets bigger.

She is now allowed out and about and has been on a scarecrow finding walk.

Socks seems to be resigned to her living in th house.

She may look like butter wouldn't melt.

However she has had her moments!

Oh dear Poppy!

Villain or Hero?

I haven't had much time to go scarecrow hunting yet but here are a few I have spotted when I have been out and about. The theme this year is Heros and Villains.
I had to Google this one and gather that this Angry Bird is called Red.

I recognise this clever one. I used to love the Pink Panther films.

I pass these quite frequently and fortunately it was quiet enough to stick my phone out the window for these pictures.

Hopefully I should have a chance to explore some more this week as long as they have survived Storm Brian.
