It was lovely to get out for the first walk of the year with some friends. We walked around East Harptree which is a village on the very edge of the Mendips and looks out over the Chew Valley. The weather today although not raining was dull and not suitable for taking photos of the views. It did however seem a good opportunity in such an old village to look for something over 100 years old.
The village itself is mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book and Richmont Castle of which only a few remains are left dates back to the 12th Century. One of the stiles that we crossed looked like it had been in position for a long time.
There is no doubt that the Church of St Laurence is well over 100 years dating back to the late 12th Century.
Further on in the walk we went past the Smithan Chimney which dating from 1867 is the only remaining lead smelting chimney on the Mendips.
The area around this village is both interesting and very pretty. The combe looked rather muddy today but has some interesting ferns and is supposed to be pretty in the spring.
We had great company with my friends little spaniel.
And of course my friends as well!
