Here the barley is being cut on the left and the potato crop is growing on the right.
The whole of the grain and stem is cut by the combine.
The stem or straw as it is now termed is deposited out of the back.
The barley grain is periodically emptied into a trailer.
The grain is then taken back to the farm for storage.
Love seeing combine harvesters while driving along. A true sight of summer!

ReplyDeletelovely to see barley harvest - is it destined for beer? Interested to see you do not have hedges or walls between fields - I guess neither the barley not the potatoes tend to escape!
ReplyDeleteThe barley is used as animal feed. The hedges of the smaller fields were taken out a generation back when farming became more mechanised. Each old field still has its name. The amount of acreage used for crops will vary each year so the field will be split differently each time.
