A Watery Walk

On Friday we went for our Christmas Walk and Talk. We always try and do something a bit special for Christmas and also have to consider that it can be very muddy underfoot. We voted this time for a walk around Bath and a Christmas lunch in a Bath pub.
The walk is,meant to include a couple of parks, several of Bath's beautiful Georgian streets and a portion of the canal and river. We set off well enjoying the walk down the length of Pultney St and into Sydney gardens. Here we picked up the canal which alongside the railway passes through the park.

We made our way along the tow path.

The Kennet and Avon canal has been restored over recent years and is used a great deal. One man informed us that we could sail all the way to London from here. I did point out that we had forgotten to bring our boat...

There are a series of locks leading to where the canal meets the River Avon.

I very nearly missed this little lock keeper.

We then progressed along the River Avon. It was now raining heavily so my camera was stowed away. We passed under several bridges which gave us momentary respite from the rain before passing along a section with new railings and signs warning of the number of drownings in this spot. A sobering reminder of the 5 students who have sadly fallen to their death in the river late at night when returning to their halls of residence. A worry to all of us with youngsters who have or are about to start student life.
The rain plus a two path closure forced us into a detour to the park cafe for coffee. We then voted for a bit of shopping time before meeting for a wonderful Christmas lunch at The Boater pub.
Happy Christmas to all walkers!

  1. Bath is always a lovely place to walk there is so much to see. It's a shame it rained but at least you made use of the time with shopping.

  3. wonderful photos - love the 'lock keeper'. I haven't been to Bath for a very long time ... not since we lived in the south. It is such a beautiful place and I hope the rain didn't spoil your day.

  4. Great walk - and the great thing about canal and river walks is that they are so nice and flat! Such a shame about the rain.
