The Final Walk

The last day of our walking weekend started in Lynmouth. You cannot visit Lynmouth without thinking of the tremendous flood disaster that hit this little village in 1952. There an been an exceptional amount of rain which surged down the two river Lyns and resulted in devastation and the death of 28 people. It was hard to believe as we walked up to Watersmeet on such a sunny  day as last Sunday when the river although fast flowing in places was generally shallow.

The bridges are all new as they were all washed away.

The walk up to Watersmeet is relaxing and unchallenging with just a few uphill stretches although our aching legs felt them more than usual!

Our hosts at the B&B had told us to look out for the Ginger Beer Spring. This was the site of the Lynrock Water factory that bottled spring water and made ginger beer. There is little to see now apart from a stone mantlepiece in the rock, a bottle and the spring itself.

The scenery is beautiful up and down the river.

There was brief stop for a bit of pooh sticks!

On our return journey we stopped for a few moments in the Midleham memorial garden which is on the site where several cottages stood before they were washed away. The bedstead tree remains as a reminder of the devastation caused.

It was certainly a weekend of quirky trees.

Well after this thoughtful finish it was time to head homewards after a great weekend.

  1. I think the second photo from the top is perfect for a postcard. Interesting about the headboard embedded into the tree.
